National Library of Scotland — Appointment of member

The National Library of Scotland (NLS) is one of the world's leading research libraries with a particular focus on the study of Scotland and the Scots, and is one of Scotland's premier cultural institutions. It exists to advance universal access to knowledge about Scotland and in Scotland. The Library collects information, knowledge and creative outputs, preserves these collections for future generations and makes them accessible to people in order to stimulate research, creativity, learning and enjoyment.

The National Library of Scotland Act 2012 sets out new functions that will allow the Library to develop as a modern forward-looking public body. This is a unique opportunity to be part of the Board that will shape the future of the Library under its new legislation.

NLS is governed by the National Library of Scotland Board, which has collective responsibility for ensuring that the statutory purposes of NLS are being fulfilled, that Scottish Ministers' policies and priorities are being met, and that the use of resources represents an appropriate and effective use of public funds. The Board has a crucial role in determining the strategies, policies and priorities for the Library and in overseeing the work of the Chief Executive and management team.

We are looking for up to seven new Board members to take part in the dynamic evolution of this multi-faceted, complex organisation. The Library employs 300 people and has a current annual budget of £17.5m. Candidates should have strategic level experience of one or more of the following:

  • Finance — e.g. planning and control of budgets in excess of £0.5m
  • Audit and risk management
  • Marketing and communications – including new media
  • Education and research — e.g. higher education/research collaboration
  • Library services — e.g. delivering modern library services.

Board members should have the ability to contribute to the Library's future vision and strategic direction, to analyse and challenge constructively information and proposals, to communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders in one-to-one and group situations using excellent interpersonal skills, and to demonstrate an understanding of the principles of effective corporate governance and public accountability.

Applications are welcome from all those who feel they meet the published essential criteria. We would also like to ensure that the Board carries broad geographical representation.

The new appointees will formally take up post from 1 February 2014 for a period of three / four years. The posts are not remunerated, but reasonable travel and subsistence costs will be met.

Full details and an application pack are available on the Scottish Government's Public Appointments website. the closing date is Friday 27 September.
