An important area of preservation and conservation work is exhibition display, both in the National Library of Scotland and elsewhere.

Conservators work with curatorial staff on the suitability of potential exhibits and carry out any necessary remedial treatments prior to exhibition.

Display cases

They custom-make support cradles and mounts and assist with setting up exhibits in the display cases.

Light levels within the display cases are carefully controlled and temperature and relative humidity is monitored for the duration of the exhibition.

We also ensure that facilities at other institutions are suitable before any NLS material is sent out on loan. Borrowers must provide adequate security and display conditions, and pay for all associated costs.

Preparing for exhibitions or lending NLS material involves a great deal of work to ensure that what is put on show for the public today will be preserved for future generations.

Work with others

We work closely with other departments and with institutions, to keep standards of exhibition and display at a high level wherever National Library of Scotland items are on view.
