Scottish Bibliographies Online
Searching Separate Locations within SBO
The Scottish Bibliographies Online (SBO) database currently contains three component parts:
- Bibliography of Scotland (BOS) – a general bibliography of Scottish material published since 1976
- Bibliography of Scottish Gaelic (BOSG) – contains material of all dates published in Scottish Gaelic
- Bibliography of the Scottish Book Trade (BSBT) – contains material of all dates relating to books, publishing and related fields
These are defined as separate 'locations' within the database. There is a considerable degree of overlap among these components, but also some records unique to each.
BOS, BOSG and BSBT can be searched separately using the technique of limiting searches by location. For keyword searches, this can be done by clicking the Limits button, selecting the location required, and then clicking the Set limits button. Limits remain in force until they are cancelled by clicking the Erase limits icon. At present 'left-anchored' searches (author, subject, title) cannot be limited using this technique. But the same outcome can be achieved by doing a left-anchored search without any limits, then clicking on the Post limit button, selecting the limits required, and clicking on the Set limits button. This has the effect of reducing the existing search set as specified.
Searches can also be limited by language and different limits, such as language, date of publication and country of publication, can be combined in a single search. In the case of Scottish Gaelic, limiting by language is not entirely reliable because of recent changes to the list of language codes.
