  He took his M.A. at Edinburgh University, 16 September 1695, and was schoolmaster of Prestonpans in December 1700. He was called to be Minister of Humbie in East Lothian on 1 January 1701, and ordained on the 16 April. He refused to sign the formula, was rebuked by the Synod, joined in a complaint to the General Assembly in 1705, and finally demitted 4 November 1714. He was committed to the Tolbooth, together with Walter Ruddiman, the son of Thomas, 13 April 1717 for printing a pamphlet Mercy, Now or Never but was released two days later. He married, in March 1704, Janet, daughter of William Thomson, Writer to the Signet, Edinburgh, and died 13 December 1730, age 54. Will registered 23 November 1736.

  Robert McKell, millwright of Glasgow was granted a tack of two corn mills at Dunipace 1745. In 1751 he took a tack of the lands of Goldiefield and built a papermill and waulkmill at the point where the mill lade that powered the cornmills at Dunipace returned to the River Carron near Larbert. Tenanted by Andrew Aiken. It was taken over by the Carron Company in 1760, and may have ceased production by 1762, certainly by 1766

  George Aikman (1787 or 1788-1865) was employed by W. H. Lizars before starting his own business in 1823. He married Alison Mackay; and died 16 October 1865 and is buried in St Cuthbert’s Burial Ground, Edinburgh; New Dir 1824 says 2 Ingliston Street. Their son also George (1830-1905) born 20 May 1830 was educated at the High School, and afterwards apprenticed to his father, and after a journeyman period spent in Manchester and London became a partner in the business. While an apprentice he had attended the Trustee Academy, and as early as 1850 was exhibiting at the Royal Scots Academy. He married Elizabeth Barnett 2 December 1859. In 1876 he gave up business for painting. He was elected an ARSA in 1880. He died in Edinburgh 8 January 1905.

He surveyed Selkirkshire in 1772 and published the map on two sheets 21 June 1773. Published Ainslie’s Atlas of the world. Married Christian Caverhill at Edinburgh 27 October 1776; Watson says that he married Mary Lookup daughter of Andrew Lookup, Provost of Jedburgh 1 January 1782. He died at 28 Nicolson Street, Edinburgh 29 February 1828.

  "When an inventory of the books in Glasgow Cathedral was made in 1432 one volume was in the hands of Domini Richardi air ad ligandum (Registrum Episcopatus Glasguensis, Vol.2, 335). There is some doubt as to the correct form of the surname, as in the Maitland Club copy of the Inventory (Glasgow, 1831) it appears as "Ay [Hay?]" and in a transcript in Glasgow University Library as "An". However as the form Air seems reasonable and has already appeared in print J.H. Stevenson ‘The Fifteenth Century Scots Binding of the Haye Manuscript.’ Publications of the Edinburgh Bibliographical Society, Vol.6, 1901-4, pp.77-82, I retain it here."

  William Murray Borthwick published a cheap magazine called The Clydesdale Magazine at Lanark. On its failure he projected in February 1820, The Clydesdale Journal 'a loyal weekly paper'. He advertised in a Glasgow paper for an editor who could advance £300 and Robert Alexander applied. He went to Hamilton early in July 1820, but withdrew when he discovered the real circumstances. However he was persuaded to take the editorship on the understanding that the paper should be removed to Glasgow. The last number of the Clydesdale Journal appeared on 28 September 1821. In 1821 the printing materials were sequestered at the instance of Borthwick’s creditors and bought in by Alexander who thereafter published the Glasgow Sentinel. Borthwick was imprisoned in March 1822 for an old debt in 1822. He wrote to some of the individuals who had been traduced by the Sentinel, and offered them the originals of the offending articles if they paid his debt and released him from prison. They did and he broke into the offices of the Sentinel and a large part of the papers of the newspaper were taken away to Edinburgh. Borthwick was apprehended and indicted for trial at Glasgow in April 1822, but proceedings were ultimately dropped. The papers resulted in the fatal duel between James Stuart of Dearn and Sir Alexander Boswell Bart of Auchinleck. Robert Alexander, printer of Glasgow was admitted to Sanctuary for debt at Holyroodhouse 6 January 1823.
