He died 25 April 1838.

  James Birrell was the son of William Birrell, dyer afterwards salt-agent, and Agnes Thomson. He was born in Scoonie on 19 October 1788. he settled in Kirkcaldy in 1809. On 12 February 1832, he married Ellen King, daughter of Thomas King, inn-keeper Stranraer. They had at least three children. James Birrell went to live in Glasgow with his son James, and died there 6 May 1860. James employed his brother William (1799-1864) as journeyman printer and bookbinder. He remained in Kirkcaldy after his brother had left.

  William Birrell was the son of William Birrell, dyer afterwards salt-agent, and Agnes Thomson. He was born in 1799. From about 1816, he was employed by his elder brother James Birrell. He was living with the family at the census of 1851. When his brother went to Glasgow in November 1855, and probably continued to work as a journeyman. He died at Linktown 9 February 1864.

  Adam Black was born on 20 February 1784, son of Charles Black, mason, and Isabella Nicol. Apprenticed to the bookseller John Fairbairn 20 March 1799. On the 22 August 1804 he set out for London, and after a little trouble was taken on by Lackington. There he remained until Whitsun 1807 when he returned to Edinburgh. Married Isabella Tait 4 June 1817. The National Library of Scotland has his Catalogue of Books for 1822. Bought the copyright of the Encyclopaedia Britannica in 1827. Initial only 1833. Brought his nephew Charles Black into the business in 1834. Lord Provost 1843-48, he was Member of Parliament for Edinburgh 1856-65. In 1851 he purchased the copyright of the Waverley Novels from the representatives of Mr Cadell. Charles Black died in 1854 at the age of 47. Meanwhile Blackie brought his three younger sons into the firm, James Tait Black (1826-1911), Francis (1830-92) and Adam William (1836-1898). At the end of 1870 he retired,and died on 24 January 1874. He wrote many pamphlets on political and religious subjects. Apprentice: Thomas Ireland junior, Burgess 19 February 1830 apprenticed the same day as from 2 January 1815.

  John Blackie, son of John Blackie and Agnes Burrell, was born in Glasgow on 27 October 1781. His parents came from Haddington and were married in Glasgow. He was sent out to work in the tobacco trade at the age of six and apprenticed to Robert Dobbie, a weaver, at eleven in 1794. His apprenticeship ended in 1799, and Blackie spent a further two years with his old master as a journeyman weaver, he then took employment in the weaving shop of John Duncan. In 1804 he married their youngest daughter Catherine. Shortly after the birth of his eldest son, John, he gave up weaving and became a bookseller, working for the Brownlies. He was engaged by one of the brothers 'to travel for him to canvas and deliver' A. & W. D. Brownlie sold there business in or about 1808 to John Blackie. On 20 November 1809 he went into partnership with Archibald Fullarton and William Sommerville, all of whom had worked for Brownlies. In 1819 the firm split in two, though still linked in partnership, Blackie went into partnership with the firms printer, Edward Khull, at the old address in Glasgow, while the other partners set up as Fullarton, Sommerville & Co booksellers in Edinburgh. In 1821 William Sommerville resigned from the Edinburgh firm and in 1826 Edward Khull resigned though remaining on the same premises and Blackie's eldest son John (1805-73) joined the firm. The Glasgow firm became Blackie, Fullarton & Co. In 1821 the partnership between Blackie and Fullarton was dissolved. John Blackie's second son, Walter Graham Blackie (1816-1906) was trained as a printer, and when George Brookman proved unreliable in 1837 took over the Valleyfield Printing Works, which John Blackie had bought some years previously, and which had been operating under the name of George Brookman and Co. The firm was now called W.G. Blackie & Co. It continued as a separate company in name until the second half of the century. However in 1842 W.G. Blackie and his younger brother Robert (1820-96) were made partners in Blackie & Son. In 1860 John Blackie senior retired, but already by 1845 the day to day running of the business was in the hands of John Blackie junior. John Blackie senior died in 1874. John junior had died the previous year. Religious books had been his speciality, and with his death, that side of the firm's activities was allowed to die away, and they turned in stead to educational publishing. John Alexander Blackie (1850-1918), the eldest son of Walter Blackie became a partner in 1876. Robert Blackie's son, James Robertson Blackie (1854-1911) joined the firm in 1877, and became a partner in 1881. Walter G. Blackie's son Walter Wilfred Blackie (1860-1953) left the firm to farm in Canada, but was persuaded to return in 1884 to take over the London branch. The firm became a Limited Company in 1890. Talwin Morris became head of the art department in 1892.

  William Blackwood was born 20 December 1776, was apprenticed to Bell and Bradfute in 1790 for six years. In 1800 he went into partnership with Robert Ross, a bookseller and auctioneer of books. Member of the Edinburgh Bookseller's Society October 1800. In 1804 he set up as a bookseller dealing chiefly in old books. The following year, in October 1805, he married Janet Stuart. In 1817 he founded Blackwoods Magazine. His two eldest sons, Alexander Blackwood (1806-1845) and Robert Blackwood (1808-52), followed him into the business. William Blackwood died 16 September 1834. A third son, John Blackwood (1818-1879), was in charge of the London branch, opened in 1840. On the death of Alexander, John became head of the firm. The third brother William Blackwood (1810-1861) joined the firm in 1848, and his son a third William (1836-1912) entered the firm in 1857 and succeeded his uncle John in 1879.   Sir David Hunter Blair Bart (1778-1857); In 1785, Sir James Hunter Blair Baronet and John Bruce obtained a patent of the reversion of the post of King's Printers for Scotland for 41 years starting at the expiration of Kincaid's patent in July 1798. Sir James Hunter Blair died in 1787, and it was accordingly the next baronet, Sir John Hunter Blair, who started printing with John Bruce in July 1797. He died in 1800, and was succeeded by Sir David Hunter Blair. In 1823 the King's Printers presented the Bible Societies of Scotland with a document insisting that all Bibles distributed in Scotland must be bought from them under the terms of their patent. As their Bibles were very expensive, the matter was hotly disputed by the Bible Societies, and particularly by John Lee, D.D., Principal of Edinburgh University. His Memorial for the Bible Societies of Scotland. Edinburgh, 1824 is a masterpiece of exegesis and historical scholarship. Though the Bible Societies lost their case in the end, on the expiry of the patent of Hunter Blair and Bruce, no further Kings Printers for Scotland were appointed and other arrangements were made for the printing of the Bible in Scotland.

  Published a cheap magazine called The Clydesdale Magazine. On its failure he projected in February 1820, The Clydesdale Journal 'a loyal weekly paper'. He advertised in a Glasgow paper for an editor who could advance £300 and Robert Alexander applied. He went to Hamilton early in July 1820, but withdrew when he discovered the real circumstaces. However he was persuaded to take the editorship on the understanding that the paper should be removed to Glasgow. The last number of the Clydesdale Journal appeared on 28 September 1821. In 1821 the printing materials were sequestered at the instance of Borthwick's creditors and bought in by Alexander who thereafter published the Glasgow Sentinel. In March 1822 Borthwick was imprisoned for a debt of £50, and while in prison was approached by Mr William Spalding SSC as agent for some of the individuals who had been libelled by the Sentinel and whom Borthwick had approached with apologies. After consultation with his clients, Spalding paid the £50 and released Borthwick who broke into the offices of The Sentinel and took away a large part of the papers of the newspaper, and handed them over to Spalding who took them to Edinburgh. Borthwick was apprehended and indicted for trial at Glasgow in April 1822, but proceedings were ultimately dropped. The fatal duel between James Stuart of Dunearn and Sir Alexander Boswell Bart of Auchinleck was an indirect result of this business.
