• Edin Dir. Williamson's directory for the City of Edinburgh, Canongate, Leith and suburbs, from 25th May 1773, to 25th May 1774. Edinburgh, 1773. Williamson in his advertisement appended to his directoy for 1784 he mentions a charge of twopence for entry in the directory, which explains some of the strange ommissions. These early directories are irregular, mostly annual, but with some intended to cover longer periods, for directories before 1804 this list gives the dates on the titlepages. Each directory appeared in July of the earliest year mentioned. 1774-5; 1775-6; 1776-7; 1777-78; 1778-9; 1780-1; 1782-3; 1783-4 (the 1782 directory with a new title-page and a short supplement); 1784-85; 1786-8 (includes Midlothian); 1788-90; 1790-92; Supplement to 1790-92 [appeared in 1791 and therefore cited as 1791]; Appendix 1792 [cited as 1792]; 1794-96; (1786 includes Midlothian) Williamson's Directory 1794 is cited as Williamson 1794 to distinguish it from Aitchison's Directory.

• The Post Office annual directory, for 1825-26. Edinburgh, 1825-32 (from 1825-32 the Post Office annual directory is in agenda format, and has a list of streets; from 1826 it also has a street map of Edinburgh)
• The Novel Directory; being a curious and humorous arrangement of surnames, in systematic and scientific order, containing the names of about 1600 living characters in the City of Edinburgh and Vicinity. Edinburgh: printed for the author, and sold by all the booksellers, 1827. The first column is a narrative made out of the surnames, the second column has the names, occupations and addresses. It does not seem to contain any useful information. Moreover it was based on the directory for 1825.

• Gray's Annual Directory. containing, under two different arrangements, the names of the...principal inhabitants of Edinburg... [1832-33] Edinburgh: John Gray, 1832. -an octavo containing a street directory, a trade index, and an advertising supplement. 'it was stated in my prospectus...that it would contain all the names in the Edinburgh and Leith Post Office Directory...the other Directory was published on Tuesday the 5th of June...July 9. It is now finished.'
• Gray's  Annual Directory 1833-34, Containing under three different arrangements, the names of... the principal inhabitants of Edinburgh. Edinburgh: John Gray, 1883.  The three are an alphabetical directory, a street directory and a trade directory.
•  The Post-Office annual directory for 1833-34. Edinburgh 1833-1850. (from 1833-35 The Post-Office Annual Directory [from 1835 'and Calendar'] is a small quarto in double column and contains in addition to the main directory, a street directory and an alphabetical list of the professions and principal trades'and a 'twopenny post town directory' including Dalkeith, Musselburgh, Pennicuick etc. It also contains an advertising supplement; from 1839 the Edinburgh and Leith Directories formerly separate are combined. In 1846 the twopenny post directory is replaced by a County directory containing only land-owners. In 1847, though it is still called a County Directory it has at least some tradesmen, and more from 1848-50.)
