Press release issued by the Scottish Labour Party, 8 November 2001
Lesley Quinn, General Secretary of the Scottish Labour Party, paid tribute to Henry McLeish.
Ms Quinn said: 'I am saddened by the news that Henry has decided to resign as First Minister. Henry has been an excellent friend and colleague and has worked tirelessly for many years helping establish the Scottish Parliament. I would like to pay tribute to the contribution he has made both for his constituents and the Labour Party in Scotland. Henry is an excellent member of the Scottish Parliament and I am sure he will continue to work hard for the people of Central Fife.'
Labour's Secretary of State Helen Liddell added: 'I deeply regret that Henry McLeish has resigned as First Minister. He has been a great servant to Scotland.
'He took over in difficult circumstances, and even in one short year he has helped craft a new Scotland and make devolution the success it is.
'Henry is a friend. He is a man of sincerity and compassion who has devoted his life to the service of the community. Under his leadership, the Scottish Executive has achieved much.'
