Scotland, and particularly the city of Edinburgh, has been a major centre of book production, and this geographical location has prompted and assisted the growth of an outstanding collection of business archives from the industry.
The earliest major publishing archive acquired was that of William Blackwood & Sons, publishers of the famous 'Blackwood's Magazine'.
Other large and important collections in the Library include those of:
- Oliver and Boyd
- W and R Chambers, publishers of 'Chambers' Journal', dictionaries, and encyclopaedias
- Map publisher and printer John Bartholomew
- Theological publisher T & T Clark.
Archives of printing firms include those of R & R Clark and of T & A Constable.
