Copyright restrictions

We are unable to copy the following items because of copyright regulations, unless you obtain written permission from the publisher:

  • maps published in the UK within the last 70 years (except those covered by crown copyright)
  • maps covered by crown copyright published within the last 50 years (including Ordnance Survey maps). For permission to copy Ordnance Survey maps less than 50 years old, contact:

Conservation restrictions

For conservation reasons, material which might be damaged will not be photocopied. Photocopies are not available for:

  • pre-1801 items in bound volumes
  • some later maps in bound volumes
  • fragile and vulnerable items (e.g. some Edinburgh maps).

Other forms of reprography may be available (e.g. photography).

In general, whole sheets will be copied to prevent damage to originals. For private and educational use, A2 or A1 photocopy extracts may be provided if the map is suitable, but not A3 or A4 (unless photocopy restrictions apply).
