Notes This bible comes through the family of the Earls of Moray and it has the names and times of birth of the children on the front pastedown. The owner was James Stewart, Earl of Moray who came to the titles in 1638 and died in 1653. The notes on the rear pastedown about when the Earl read the bible, and what parts, is also interesting because the dates chime quite well with significant national events such as the visit of the King to Scotland in 1633, the Montrose Wars 1645-6, and the second English Civil War of 1647-8. The contemporary binding with a central design of the order of the garter, and elaborate corner pieces is something that may reward further research, though it has borne the brunt of long exposure in poor conditions. The owner, whose ancestor gifted the book to St Fillans church in Aberdour, was the grandson of the 'bonny' Earl of Moray, who was famously murdered by the Earl of Huntly in 1592, the event being recorded in a ballad.
