Book signing: 'The Greatest Game'

In his entertaining compendium, Professor David Purdie takes a seriously humorous look at our knowledge of the game of golf. Beautifully illustrated by Hugh Dodd, 'The Greatest Game' also contains a foreword by Colin Montgomerie and is a must for any golfer.
David, Hugh and Colin will all be present to sign and inscribe copies of the book, which will be on sale in the NLS shop. If you cannot attend the signing, you can pre-order signed copies by phoning 0131 623 3918.

Talk: 'The Greatest Game'

Golf is known to our stern ancestors as 'The Ancyent & Healthfulle Exercyse of the Golff'. It is – like radar, penicillin and whisky – one of Scotland's greater discoveries. Its history, however, has abounded in mystery – but no longer! Journalist and humourist Professor David Purdie and golfing artist Hugh Dodd combine serious fact and hilarious invention to lay bare the lie(s) of the links.

Talk: 'How did a Scottish game conquer the world?'
David Hamilton reveals how Scottish golf spread vigorously to the rest of the world in the 1880s. Changes in society and sport meant that golf's time had come, first in England then in Europe and North America. Of the two levels of club play in Scotland, only 'the gentlemen's game' was exported, with the 'artisan' players staffing the new clubs as professionals and clubmakers.

Talk: 'Departures and arrivals'

'Departures and arrivals' celebrates new unpublished work from Scottish PEN writers such as Alexander McCall Smith, Louise Welsh, James Robertson and Linda Cracknell are among the illustrious names involved in the project. Some of the writers (not necessarily those named here) will perform their work live and discuss the idea of journeys, both of the mind and in reality.

Talk: 'The Faded Map: The lost kingdoms of Scotland'

Join Alistair Moffat as he takes us on a remarkable journey. His book 'The Faded Map' brings to vivid life the half-forgotten kings and kingdoms of 2,000 years ago. Alistair will talk of a Celtic society which spoke to itself in Old Welsh, and where the Sons of Prophesy ruled. It was a time when the English kings of Bernicia held sway over vast swathes of what is now Scotland.
