Preparatory watercolour of Mary Livingstone's grave, with written instructions by her husband about amending the image before publication.
David Livingstone's wife, Mary (1821-1862), accompanied him on many of his travels. She suffered many hardships on these African journeys, before dying of fever in camp at Shupanga.
John Kirk's photograph of Mary's grave on the day of the funeral was the basis of a later engraved illustration.
The preparatory watercolour shown here was annotated by Livingstone with instructions to change the size of the great baobab tree.
Images of Mary Livingstone's grave featured in the 'Picturing Africa' exhibition, which ran from 14 June to 3 November 2013.
