Slavery

'Gang of captives met at Mbame's on their
way to Tette'. (From 'Missionary travels and researches in Africa',
1857.)

Although of limited success as a missionary, David Livingstone inspired many with his resolute campaign against the barbaric practice of slavery.
Some of his most powerful illustrations, still able to shock today, were of the treatment of slaves.
Find out more about Livingstone and African slavery in the 'Picturing Africa' exhibition at NLS from 14 June to 3 November.
