Old Barbel

Man surrounded by grotesque fish

'"Where am I?" said Old Barbel, rubbing his eyes.' An illustration for 'Old Barbel the fisherman' from 'Grimm's goblins' (London, 1861) [NLS shelfmark: Mas.412].

'Grimms' goblins' is a collection of fairy tales and goblin lore for young readers.

It tries to combine the best tales of all nations and languages.

Its illustrations are produced by chromoxylography, a colour woodblock printing process.

This scene shows Father Barbel the fisherman facing the King of the Pikes.

The book featured in the 'Illustrating the Grimms' display at the National Library of Scotland, which ran from 19 September to 18 November 2012
