General Reading Room and Special Collections Reading Room

The General Reading Room and Special Collections Reading Room in our George IV Bridge Building are open at these times:

  • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday:   09.30-20.30
  • Wednesday:   10.00-20.30
  • Saturday:   09.30-13.00
  • Sunday:   Closed

Readers should return all material to the Collection and Return Desk no later than 10 minutes before closing time to allow staff to complete closing procedures.

Maps Reading Room

The Maps Reading Room in our Causewayside Building is open at these times:

  • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday:   09.30-17.00
  • Wednesday:   10.00-17.00
  • Saturday:   09.30-13.00

These are our standard opening times for exhibitions in the George IV Bridge Building. Please check the exhibitions page to make sure of the times for the exhibition you want to visit.

Scottish Screen Archive

Opening hours for contacting and visiting the Scottish Screen Archive in Hillington are:

  • Monday-Friday:   09.30-16.30


Public holidays

The National Library of Scotland closes for a few selected public holidays during the year.

  • Friday 3 and Monday 6 April: Easter holidays — the Visitor Centre and exhibitions will be open for a limited time on these dates: details to follow
  • Friday 25 and Monday 28 December: Christmas holidays
  • Friday 1 and Monday 4 January: New Year holidays.
