Letters from Charles
Darwin to John Murray

At an event in the National Library of Scotland today (28 March) the John Murray Archive was welcomed to Scotland.

Patricia Ferguson, Scottish Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport, joined National Librarian Martyn Wade to open the last of the packages of manuscripts and papers that have been delivered from London during the past week. Also present was Patrick Caddell, a member of the Scottish Committee of the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Both the HLF and the Scottish Executive have awarded grants towards the NLS bid to buy the John Murray Archive and keep it in the UK. The Library now has a campaign under way to reach the final funding target of £6.5 million.

On display today were key iconic items from the collection, including:

  • a Jane Austen cheque
  • a letter from Charles Darwin
  • a letter from Mary Shelley to Lord Byron
