An online resource has been developed to help people using newspapers for research. The Guide to Scottish Newspaper Indexes lists the newspapers in Scotland which have an index to their contents. It shows the dates covered, and where each index can be consulted.

The guide is a searchable database developed at the National Library of Scotland by NEWSPLAN Scotland. Other Scottish libraries collaborated in the project and contributed local material.

A survey carried out by NEWSPLAN Scotland a few years ago revealed that researchers would welcome a list of indexes. Although not all newspapers have one, an index can help reduce research time by pinpointing the date when an article was written.
