Flooding incident on 26 February

Our George IV Bridge Building has been affected by a flooding incident.

A failure with a sprinkler pipe on the 12th floor started the flood at 18.30. Within 10 minutes the flood was contained. Lothian and Borders Fire Brigade were quickly on site and brought the situation under control. Most of the water was diverted out of the building through drainage systems to street level on George IV Bridge and at the rear entrance on the Cowgate.

Some water reached the collections areas on levels below, but there has been only light water damage to a small amount of material stored there. Initial reports suggest that most of the 6 million or so items housed in the building have not been affected.

Library staff, including conservation specialists worked through the night to ensure the safety of the collections.

It is too early to say what caused the sprinkler system failure.

The John Murray Archive Exhibition will be closed until further notice.
