Celebrate World Book Day at the National Library of Scotland

World Book Day tours of the Library's George IV Bridge Building

To mark World Book Day, 3 March, visit the National Library of Scotland for a tour of the Library's George IV Bridge building. See 'behind the scenes' at Scotland's largest library and find out about our national literary treasures.

Tours will be running throughout the day, starting at 10am and on every half hour thereafter, with the last tour being at 4:30pm. Each tour lasts approximately 30-45minutes.

On the tour you will appreciate the range of the 8million printed items which form the national collections, learn how the Library acquires 6000 items every week, witness the scale of over 100 miles of shelving, discover the history of the Library and gain an insight into how the Library runs on a daily basis.

In addition to the tours there is also an opportunity to see a unique exhibition of award winning bookbindings - handcrafted items showing great skill and outstanding quality. The winners of the National Library of Scotland's Elizabeth Soutar Bookbinding Competition 2004, which attracted entries from throughout the UK and Europe, have just been announced and the winning entries are on display. Also on display is a selection of facsimile items from the John Murray Archive.
