Dalai Lama shown treasures at NLS
During his visit to the National Library of Scotland (NLS), the Dalai Lama was shown a selection of items of personal interest.
This included letters, books and photographs by the Victorian traveller Isabella Bird who journeyed extensively in the Far East, including twice visiting Tibet. NLS has a rich collection of her papers including her book 'Among the Tibetans'.
The Dalai Lama was also shown material from the Library’s Medical History of British India archive which gives a fascinating insight into the history of disease and its prevention in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Martyn Wade, National Librarian and Chief Executive of the NLS said: 'We are delighted to welcome His Holiness the Dalai Lama to the Library to see some selected highlights from our collections relating to Tibet. This is part of our mission to record and reflect the ideas and cultures of countries around the world.'
