The poem The Complaint of the Black Knight was often attributed in Scotland to Chaucer. In fact the author was another English poet, John Lydgate.
About the printers
In 1507 King James IV granted merchant Walter Chepman and bookseller Andro Myllar a licence to begin printing in Scotland. In 1508 they established their press in the Cowgate in Edinburgh.
Nine items printed by Chepman and Myllar and two other related books make up the volume known as 'the Chepman and Myllar prints'. Together they form the first Scottish books. |
