The Scottish Screen Archive is Scotland's national moving image collection. It houses more than 32,000 films and videos presenting over 100 years of Scotland's history.

20th-century Scotland
The moving image collection at the National Library of Scotland is a rich source of information about Scotland in the 20th century. Home movies and professional productions reveal:
- The lives of ordinary Scots
- Social, industrial and cultural changes
- The work and achievements of Scottish film-makers.
Most of our material is non-fiction. A large part of the collection is amateur footage. Also within the archive we have:
- Television broadcasts in Gaelic since 1993.
- Documentaries, public information films and newsreels.
- Photographs and oral recordings.
- Written material about the history of Scottish film production and cinema exhibition.
Saving archive films

The Scottish Screen Archive has a vital role to play in saving archive films for the nation. Our conservation work makes old and often damaged film available that might otherwise have been lost for good.

More about the archive
The archive was set up in 1976 to find, protect and provide access to Scotland's moving image heritage. It has been part of the Collections Department at the National Library of Scotland since 1 April 2007.
The Scottish Screen Archive is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
