The Aberdeen Breviary

Thanks to the unwavering support of individual donors, trusts and foundations the National Library of Scotland acquired the Aberdeen Breviary and its rare additional binding, 'The Compassio Beate Marie', in May 2014.

The Aberdeen Breviary dates back to 1509 when King James IV of Scotland commissioned two Edinburgh merchants, Chepman and Myllar, to start printing in Scotland. The book tells the story of the Scottish saints, and launched Scotland on to the cultural scene with England and its European neighbours.

The Library has digitised both the Aberdeen Breviary and the 'Compassio', which are available through the website for everyone to see.

Crowdsourcing

In early 2014 the Library raised £10,000 to create an innovative crowdsourced transcription service, allowing anyone to get involved, transcribe our manuscript collections and enhance the Library's resources and digital legacy. The service will be launched in the near future.

The John Murray Archive (JMA) Project

John Murray VII offered the National Library the opportunity to acquire the John Murray Archive in 2002. So committed was John Murray to the Library acquiring the archive that he offered a reduced purchase price of £31.2 million, despite a formal valuation at over £45 million. Rather than benefit any one individual, the proceeds from the sale have formed the John R Murray Charitable Trust, with a purpose of supporting a range of heritage projects. The generosity of John Murray and his family is greatly appreciated by the Library, and has ensured that the archive will benefit the nation for generations to come.

The campaign to acquire the archive was successfully closed on 6 April 2011.
