The Library's replica toy theatre with Olivier's 1948 film, 'Hamlet'.
[Library shelfmark: 6.420]
The Library's replica toy theatre recreates the set of Laurence Olivier's 1948 film, 'Hamlet'.
A popular 19th-century tradition, toy theatres were sold as books, to be taken home and assembled into three-dimensional stages.
Children and adults could then recreate the production in their own home, with replica stage sets and characters.
This 'Hamlet' toy theatre book was published in 1949, and was designed to fit a Benjamin Pollock toy theatre.
This item featured in our display, 'Playing Shakespeare: 400 years of great acting', at the Library from 17 March until 12 June 2016.
