The National Library of Scotland has generally welcomed the Scottish Culture Minister's response to the recommendations of the Cultural Commission last year.
Presenting her report to the Scottish Parliament on 19 January, Patricia Ferguson made several announcements which affect the Library. Included were:
- The merger of Scottish Screen Archive with NLS
- Continued direct funding of the national collections bodies (such as NLS) by the Scottish Executive
- A national project to promote the digitisation of Scotland's culture
In her report, entitled 'Scotland's Culture', the Minister has identified Scotland's national collections as 'centres of excellence'. Currently the national collections are NLS, the National Galleries of Scotland and the National Museums of Scotland, although this list will now expand. As part of the Scottish Executive's cultural rights agenda, these bodies are expected to provide assistance and advice to other museums and libraries where appropriate.
The NLS response to the Minister's announcement is available to read online.
