A symposium on Friday 17 November commemorates the 70th anniversary of the start of the Spanish Civil War.
'Images and Memories' is a one-day event at the National Library of Scotland. Special guests include the Spanish Consul General and Steve Fullarton, one of two surviving Scottish volunteers from the International Brigade.
Proving how popular the subject is, the symposium has been fully booked for weeks, with a growing reserve list for cancellations.
Those attending the event will see propaganda posters from NLS collections, such as 'Victoria' ('Victory') by Josep Renau (pictured). Until the end of this month, other items relating to the war are on public display in the George IV Bridge Building, including:
- Photographs and letters
- Papers from our archives of Scottish International Brigaders
- A forage cap, a Christmas card and other memorabilia.
One notable item is a copy of a 1937 Spanish Embassy publication. Aimed at strengthening support in Britain for the war, it was endorsed by key Labour politicians of the day. Among the signatories were Clement Attlee, who later became Prime Minister, and William Wedgewood Benn, father of former Cabinet Minister Tony Benn.
