James Kelman is the winner of the Book of the Year prize in the 27th annual Saltire Society Literary Awards.
Kelman's novel 'Kieron Smith, Boy' won him the £5,000 prize. Presenting the awards at the National Library of Scotland today was Culture Minister Linda Fabiani MSP. The full list of the literary awards this year is:

Book of the Year:
'Scott's Shadow: The Novel in Romantic Edinburgh' by Ian Duncan (Princeton University Press)
- History book:
'From Pictland to Alba: 789-1070' by Alex Woolf (Edinburgh University Press).
Two of Scotland's most talented women received honorary membership of the Saltire Society at the ceremony. Artist Dame Elizabeth Blackadder and Dr Joy Hendry, Editor of 'Chapman Magazine', were honoured for their immense contribution to Scottish art and literature.
During the event, the Culture Minister announced Homecoming Year sponsorship for the literary awards in 2009. The financial support of £25,000 will include a new 'Homecoming Award'.
