'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' is the first in the series by J K Rowling. Published in 1997, it is also one of the most translated modern novels.
Some translations use Mary GrandPré's cover illustration from Scholastic's US edition, or Thomas Taylor's from the first Bloomsbury edition. Others use new illustrations which reinterpret familiar characters and scenes.
Rowling wrote much of her first book in Edinburgh. Due to the series’ links to Scotland and its profound impact on children’s literature, the Harry Potter publications are a special part of our literary collections.
