Enmity between American politicians is nothing new.
The two most important leaders of the American Revolution, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson (the first and third presidents respectively), were bitterly estranged at the time of Washington's death in 1799.

Frank Cogliano is Professor of American History at the University of Edinburgh. He is the author, most recently, of 'A Revolutionary Friendship: Washington, Jefferson, and the American Republic' (Harvard, 2024).
