The text shown here is a commentary by Isidore on Latin maxims of St John Damascene. The maxims are first quoted in Latin, then explained in Gaelic.

Like a number of other Gaelic manuscripts in the National Library of Scotland's collections, this document was written and owned by members of the Beaton family of physicians.

It later belonged to the MacLachlan family of Kilbride, and was deposited in the Advocates Library around 1851.
