How do I find out about my ancestors?
The best place to start your family history research is you. Record things like your date and place of birth, and any marriages or children. Then work your way backwards with details of your parents, siblings and grandparents.
Family memorabilia and living relatives might offer some clues to follow up on. However, you should always try and confirm any stories that you are told.
You could also join a local family history society. The Scottish Association of Family History Societies have a list of relevant societies.
How successful your research is can depend on many factors. Records may not have survived or be accurate. Literacy levels, social status and family mobility may make it harder to trace people.
Be sure to jot down every clue you find and where you found it. You never know which detail could lead to more information.
