Valuation rolls
If your ancestor owned or occupied property in Scotland, valuation rolls might give you certain details of their life.
Valuation rolls, made between 1855 and 1989, show who owned a property, who rented it, who lived there, and how much the property was worth each year. Before 1855, valuation rolls were not made in a consistent way and people's names are often missing.
We have an incomplete set of valuation rolls in hard copy from around the 1870s onwards. Get in touch with us to find out more about what we hold.
The National Records of Scotland have a full set of valuation rolls for all of Scotland from 1855. You can find out more about searching and finding valuation rolls in the research guide on their Scotland's People website.
Local libraries and archives also often have valuation rolls for their respective council areas.
