National Library of Scotland

Join the library for free and start researching straight away. You can request items to look at in person, and, if you live in Scotland, you'll also be able to access our online eResources. You can access most eResources from home, but for some, you’ll need to visit us in Edinburgh or Glasgow.

Our collections are vast! Get an overview of the collections to find your way around first, or, if you know what you're looking for, use the catalogues to find things. We have a few different catalogues, but our catalogues guide can help you work out where you need to search. If you're stuck, get in touch with us and we can help.

Maybe you're looking for inspiration and want to stumble across something to set off a spark. Check out our collections stories or browse the collections page and see where it takes you.

Since we're not a lending library, you'll need to come to us to see physical items in person. Whether it's a map, books, film or manuscript, the relevant catalogue will let you know where you can come and look at it. Find out more about using the collections in person, including how to request items and our study spaces.

If you want to use something in our collections in your work or study, see our copyright and licensing fees guides.

Happy exploring!
